Thanks for the fix Tom, it allowed Windows Live Messenger to install on a clean XP & SP3 install.

Thank's for that quick fix this was really bothering me, It seems to be SP3 thats causing all the installation issues.

Thanks for the comment Tom. I'll be sure to try that the next time I'm fiddling with Windows Live. Hopefully someone who heads here after googling for the problem I've had will go away happy to find a solution too!

Correcting wrong information is one thing (and yeah, the author of that vista article was _very_ wrong about the mac) but basically having a circle of people piling onto a post all saying "you're wrong" over and over and over starts to look ugly after a while. It only takes one person to post a correction and maybe a few to support that correction, y'know?

Found the answer!

Running this command from the start->run solves all the installation issues, windows live messenger and the windows update:

regsvr32 wups2.dll

Could not install live messenger 8.5 on clean XP pro SP3. Same irritating message that it "can't install".

I also can't install some updates via the windows update.

Since writing this, I've done a couple of other installs of WL stuff. The installer ran fine on x64 vista ultimate at home and tanked for me and a colleague at work on 2 x64 vista business testbed machines and an XP SP2 machine.
