Sound driver for DOS outside Win98 ?

    Hello,

I successfully installed a virtual pc with Windows 98 SE. I need to have the sound working with MS-DOS OUTSIDE windows to play old games. I tried the old drivers from creative but I can't get anything working with "pure" DOS. I remember the program call "diagnose.exe" to install the sb16, but this one doesn't found the sound card.

Any help would be very apreciated !!

    THX AND SEE YA!

    Hi Raf,
Sadly, I don't even have DOS around any more to test this myself so I'm kinda shooting in the dark here.

Anyway, what drivers do you have? These http://uk.europe.creative.com/support/drivers/product.asp?bypass=1&category=2&os=15&driverlang=&prod=36&drivertype=1 seem to be the right ones for the type of card that VPC emulates under DOS.

This thread here http://www.computing.net/windows31/wwwboard/forum/10335.html has some notes on getting this working with Windows 3.1 (which should work the same way for DOS too). Would you mind letting me know if that helps. I know one of the other guys who reads this forum a bit plays with DOS a lot more than I do, I'll make sure he sees this thread too as he might have some ideas.

Sound driver for DOS outside Win98 ?

    THX FOR YOUR HELP.

I successfully installed the DOS drivers. (around 1MB)
Autoexec.bat and config.sys have been modified and the files are in c:\sb16.

The problem is that the Diagnose program can't found the sound card. You can autodetect adresses (220, 240..) but no one works. Do you remember these old sound card with lot of jumpers to configure IRQ, and other thing. Anyway I'll look again to found a solution.

I need my old win3.1 games on my winxp laptop ! That's for my job :)

    THANKS

    UPDATE :

    okay I installed a new DOS 6.22 with a clean Windows 3.11.

the driver installation is okay but always the same problem when you load autoexec.bat

    ...
    C:\>SET SOUND=C:\SB16

    C:\>SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 P330 T6

    C:\>SET MIDI=SYNTH:1 MAP:E

    C:\>C:\SB16\DIAGNOSE /S

Error: DIGN8002 The BLASTER environment settings are invalid.

    C:\>C:\SB16\MIXERSET /P /Q

    C:\>C:\DOS\SMARTDRV.EXE /X

    ...

and then when I'm running the diagnose program, I can't find the audio card :( bouhouhou

and now also I can't enter in Windows 3.1 it's frozen with the windows logo just when I type >win.

    thx for any help

    UPDATE AGAIN :

    WOOWWWWW !!

after few minutes loading windows 3.1 I have sounds like "tada.wav" !!

GREAT I'll try now to run my old DOS games from Windows and maybe it'll works :)

    THX

    Hi again,
Silly question - the sound is enabled for that virtual machine, right?
I'm told the settings you need for this sort of card in VPC's environment are as follows:

    I/O port = 0x220
    IRQ = 5
    DMA 1/8bit = 1
    DMA 2/16bit = 5
    MPU I/O = 0x330

I'm "told" that these settings should work.
